Updated: 2026-03-12 06:13:13editorial

Overview

Chokai Highland Flower-Covered Pasture Park is a high-altitude resort beneath Mount Chokai in Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture. The Ministry of the Environment's nationwide continuous star sky observation ranked it second nationally for starry sky beauty. This premier stargazing destination captivates visitors with Mount Chokai's silhouette against a full-starred sky.

Located at approximately 500 meters, the sprawling pasture offers breathtaking panoramic vistas.

Observation Environment

Positioned beneath Mount Chokai and influenced by Japan Sea weather patterns, clear nights exhibit exceptional transparency when high pressure dominates. The plateau's open landscape enables near-horizon observation. The surrounding area lacks large cities, and the pasture's unobstructed terrain permits panoramic viewing.

Autumn through winter frequently brings Japan Sea cloudiness, yet summer clear nights reward stargazers with Milky Way views and impressive meteor shower displays.

Facilities and Usage Information

On-site cottages enable leisurely nocturnal stargazing. Barbecue facilities and pasture experiences allow daytime family enjoyment followed by evening observation.

Operations run late April through early November; winter closure occurs. Reserve cottages by phone or website.

Access

About 50 minutes by car from JR Ugo-Honjo Station; about 40 minutes from Honjo IC on the Nihon-Kai Tohoku Expressway. Mountain road ascent requires careful driving.

Stargazing Tips

The pasture's open area offers maximum horizon visibility. Soft ground allows comfortable reclining observation. High-altitude nights cool even in summer—bring long-sleeved outerwear. Mount Chokai's south side opens southern sky viewing, offering summer's brightest Milky Way section.
