Kuju Highland spans the southern foothills of the Kuju Mountain range in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, at approximately 800m elevation. Protected as part of Aso-Kuju National Park, this expansive grassland represents one of Kyushu's most beloved stargazing locations among astronomy enthusiasts.

Observation Environment

Positioned in central Kyushu beneath the Kuju Mountains, the highland benefits from sufficient distance from major urban centers (Oita and Kumamoto). This isolation minimizes artificial light impact.

The approximately 800m elevation grassland features minimal obstructed views, with panoramic vistas spanning 180+ degrees focused on southern sky perspectives. Bortle Scale Class 2 darkness produces powerful Milky Way visibility.

The sight of the Milky Way rising against the silhouetted Kuju Mountains creates a spectacular vista recognized as representative of Kyushu's stargazing excellence.

Recommended Observing Locations

Multiple pull-off parking areas line the main highland road, each offering different sky perspectives. Kuju Highland Observation Point particularly excels with open southern horizons, ideal for summer Milky Way photography.

Kuju Highland Cottage lodging provides minimal artificial lighting surroundings, enabling comprehensive stargazing throughout the night. Onsen (hot spring) facilities enable hot-spring bathing while viewing stars—a luxurious experience.

Access

Approximately 50-60 minutes by car from Kujuu IC on the Oita Expressway. Access from Kumamoto via the Aso area is also available.

Observing Tips

Grassland locations experience pronounced radiative cooling; clear nights produce rapid temperature drops. Even summer nights frequently fall below 15°C, making lightweight fleece or windbreakers essential. Pastureland fence boundaries and private property require respect; unauthorized access is prohibited.
