Nobeyama Plateau in Japan — The Birthplace of Radio Astronomy, Where the Yatsugatake Stars Come Alive

Updated: 2026-03-12 06:13:06editorial

Overview

The Nobeyama Plateau spreads across the eastern base of the Yatsugatake Mountains in Minami Maki, Minami Saku, Nagano Prefecture, at about 1,350 meters elevation. It's home to the National Astronomical Observatory's Nobeyama Cosmic Radio Observatory, where a giant 45-meter parabola antenna stands as a sacred site among astronomy enthusiasts.

Nobeyama Station on the JR Koumi Line is the highest elevation station in the entire JR Group (1,345.67 meters), attracting both train and astronomy lovers.

Observation Environment

At 1,350 meters, the plateau enjoys clear skies year-round, with exceptional transparency from autumn through winter. The radio observatory's surroundings are protected from artificial electromagnetic interference, which helps preserve a naturally low-light-pollution environment.

The Yatsugatake silhouette frames the night sky beautifully, with the Milky Way arcing above the mountains—a sight that captivates many astrophotographers. The area achieves Bortle Class 2 darkness.

The roads surrounding the radio observatory and the area near the JR highest-elevation marker are popular for observation and photography. The 45-meter parabola antenna combined with the starry sky creates compositions you can capture nowhere else.

Farm roads along the plateau offer many open viewing points, allowing observation in any direction.

Access

From Nagasaka IC on the Chuo Expressway, it's about 30–35 minutes by car. From Nobeyama Station on the JR Koumi Line, the observatory is about 5 minutes away, but nighttime public transit is unavailable, so a car is essential.

Stargazing Tips

The plateau's radiative cooling brings harsh nights year-round. Summer temperatures can drop below 10°C, and winter can plunge below −15°C. Heavy winter clothing is absolutely required. The observatory grounds are off-limits; observe from surrounding public roads only.
