Overview

Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau spanning Yamguchi Prefecture's Mine City. Designated as a Quasi-National Park and Special Natural Monument, the distinctive terrain with white limestone scattered across vast grassland captivates visitors as both a premier daytime hiking destination and impressive nighttime stargazing site.

At approximately 300 meters elevation, the plateau itself has few obstructions, allowing an expansive 360-degree starry sky panorama to unfold from horizon to horizon.

Observation Environment

Akiyoshidai is located near the center of Yamaguchi Prefecture, at an appropriate distance from both the coastline and major inland cities. The plateau has minimal street lighting, maintaining approximately Bortle class 3 darkness.

The karst plateau's key advantage is its flatness and vastness. With virtually no buildings or trees, the entire 360-degree sky is observable from all directions. This environment is ideal for tracking rising and setting constellations.

Recommended Observation Points

The Karst Observation Deck parking area is spacious and well-equipped with restrooms, making it the most accessible viewing spot. From the deck, you can see the entire plateau and capture unique photographs combining limestone silhouettes with the starry sky.

The nearby Chojagamori parking area is also popular for stargazing, offering a slightly different angle on the northern sky.

Access

Approximately 15 minutes by car from Mine IC on the Chugoku Expressway and about 50 minutes from Yamaguchi Ube Airport.

Stargazing Tips

Akiyoshidai experiences strong winds, so bring a windbreaker or wind jacket. Moisture rises from the grassland, so placing a waterproof sheet under your recreation mat enhances comfort. Nighttime wildlife encounters (deer and wild boar) are possible, so making noise to announce your presence is a sound safety measure.
