Biei Town is located in central Hokkaido, south of Asahikawa City, distinguished by its rolling landscape. Known nationwide as the "Patchwork Road" and "Panorama Road," the unique scenery of undulating hills becomes an exceptional stargazing spot when night falls.

Observation Environment

The appeal of Biei's hills lies in their vastness. With few buildings or trees obstructing views, the landscape opens to a 360-degree panorama near the horizon. Though at approximately 400 meters elevation, the rural setting away from Asahikawa's urban center maintains relatively low light pollution, with Bortle class 3 conditions.

The southern and eastern hillside areas particularly preserve dark skies, allowing the faint Milky Way to be visible to the naked eye. This represents significantly superior observation conditions compared to urban areas.

Recommended Observation Points

Several famous photography locations dot Biei, but the south-central hills work best for stargazing. The typical approach is parking along the straight farm roads connecting the hills.

Summer offers green fields and flowers alongside the stars; winter presents snowy fields beneath the stars. However, trespassing on farmland is strictly prohibited. Observe from road shoulders or public parking areas only.

Access and Usage Information

Approximately 20 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport; car rental from JR Biei Station is convenient. Numerous pensions and hotels in Biei accommodate longer stays.

Stargazing Tips

Hokkaido's interior experiences temperature drops even in summer nights. Autumn through spring requires serious cold-weather preparation. Summer brings abundant insects; carry insect repellent.

Popular starscape photography combines Biei's symbol trees (Tetsugaku no Ki area, Christmas tree) with the night sky. Always respect private property rules.
