Overview

Jododaira Observatory sits at approximately 1,575m elevation along the Bandai-Asahi Skyline in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. Nestled among Azuma-Kofuji and Ichigyou Mountains in a volcanic high-altitude plateau, this facility represents one of Tohoku's finest celestial observation sites.

Within a 5.5-meter diameter dome, a 40cm reflecting telescope enables observation of nebulae, star clusters, and planets. The combination of high elevation and absence of nearby light sources produces remarkably clear Milky Way visibility to the naked eye.

Observation Environment

The 1,575m elevation is exceptionally attractive to regional astronomy enthusiasts. Compared to lowland locations, thinner atmospheric layers and reduced water vapor and dust particles produce enhanced stellar brilliance.

Approximately 40km distant from Fukushima city center, the telescope's surroundings benefit from light blockage as the Bandai-Asahi Skyline's curves ascend through protective terrain. Bortle Scale Class 2 darkness is maintained; favorable nights reveal stars of magnitude 6 and fainter.

Facilities and Equipment

The main 40cm reflecting telescope receives professional staff commentary on seasonal celestial objects. The adjacent visitor center provides learning about Azuma Mountain's natural environment and volcanic activity.

The adjacent rest house provides light meals and rest areas. Complete restroom facilities ensure comfort during extended observation sessions.

Access and Important Notes

The Bandai-Asahi Skyline operates mid-April through mid-November with winter closures. Toll-free access is now available. From Fukushima-Nishi IC, the skyline entrance is approximately 30 minutes away, followed by another 10 minutes to the observatory.

Volcanic activity occasionally triggers road closure restrictions; confirm current conditions before visiting. High elevation produces temperatures below 10°C at night even during summer; warm clothing is essential.
