Teruhoku Tenkyuukan (Star Hall) in Japan — Certified 7 Times as Japan's Clearest Starry Skies

Updated: 2026-03-12 06:13:09editorial

Overview

Teruhoku Tenkyuukan (Star Hall) is a celestial observation facility within Teruhoku Uwaba Park in Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture. In the Ministry of Environment's nationwide continuous star-sky observation surveys, this location has been officially recognized seven times as "Japan's location with the clearest starry skies"—a distinction marking it as a preeminent Japanese stargazing destination.

Positioned at 550m elevation, the uniquely designed star hall features a universe-inspired architecture housing a 65cm Cassegrain reflecting telescope.

Observation Environment

Located in the mountainous interior of the Osumi Peninsula, Teruhoku benefits from isolation from major urban centers. The southern vista opens to the Pacific Ocean, minimizing artificial light impact. The location commands views of Sakurajima volcano across Kinko Bay.

With Bortle Scale Class 2 darkness, the Milky Way appears as a powerful overhead band. Southern sky darkness permits excellent observation of southern celestial objects (Omega Centauri, for example) difficult to observe from mainland Japan. The silhouetted Sakurajima backdrop against the star-filled sky creates distinctly memorable vistas unique to this location.

Facilities and Visitor Information

The 65cm Cassegrain reflecting telescope opens for public evening viewing events. The facility includes panel exhibitions of astronomical images and star photographs, creating a space centered on cosmic themes.

Teruhoku Uwaba Park features camping facilities and bungalows enabling outdoor and stargazing combinations.

Access

Approximately 30 minutes by car from downtown Kanoya. From Kagoshima City, approximately 2 hours via Sakurajima ferry. From Kagoshima Airport, approximately 90 minutes.

Observing Tips

Kagoshima's warm climate means temperatures remain mild even in winter. However, the 550m elevation and frequently strong winds necessitate wind-resistant outerwear. During periods of active Sakurajima volcanic activity, volcanic ash reduces sky transparency.
