Onidake Observatory in Japan's Goto Islands — Experience Kyushu's Darkest Skies on a Remote Island

Overview

Onidake Observatory is an astronomical facility in the Goto Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, located on the lower slope of Onidake Mountain (315 meters), a landmark of Goto City. It houses one of Kyushu's largest telescopes: a 60cm Newtonian reflective instrument.

As an island location, light pollution is extremely minimal—an experience impossible on the mainland.

Observation Environment

The Goto Islands lie roughly 100 kilometers west of Kyushu's coast, with the nearest major city, Nagasaki, on the opposite side of the sea. Surrounded by ocean in all directions, the islands experience minimal artificial light across a 360-degree horizon, achieving Bortle Class 2 darkness.

The maritime climate means less atmospheric dust, making star colors brilliant—an island advantage. Winter brings stable atmospheric conditions (good "seeing"), ideal for observing planetary surface details.

Facilities and Usage

The 60cm Newtonian reflective telescope is available through reserved evening observation sessions. This impressive instrument offers close-up views of lunar craters, Saturn's rings, and the faint glow of nebulae.

From Onidake's lower slope, stunning vistas merge the island's sea and sky together—perfect before and after your observation session, with sunrises and sunsets as additional bonuses.

Access

Goto Tsubaki Airport is 5 minutes away by car; Fukuye Port is 15 minutes. Fukuye Island (where the observatory sits) is accessible from Nagasaki Port via jetfoil (about 85 minutes) or ferry (about 3.5 hours). Direct flights also run between Fukuoka Airport, Nagasaki Airport, and Goto Tsubaki Airport.

Stargazing Tips

Island weather changes rapidly; clouds can roll in unexpectedly. Plan multi-night stays to increase your chances. Evening observation is completely reservation-based, so book in advance when planning. Ocean winds are strong—windproof gear is essential.
