Senjogahara in Nikko, Japan — A High Moorland with Star-Filled Skies in the Kanto Region
Overview
Senjogahara is a high moorland at about 1,400 meters elevation in the Okutama area of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. This wetland is registered under the Ramsar Convention, serving as a hiking destination by day and one of the Kanto region's premier stargazing locations at night.
Just 2.5 hours from Tokyo by car, Senjogahara combines excellent accessibility with genuinely dark skies—making it the most accessible serious stargazing site for Kanto-area astronomy enthusiasts.
Observation Environment
Senjogahara excels for several reasons. First, at 1,400 meters elevation, the thinner atmosphere reduces starlight loss. Second, surrounding mountains (Nantai, Taro, and others) block light pollution from lowlands. Third, the open moorland provides broad viewing angles.
On good nights, the area achieves Bortle Class 2 darkness, revealing fine Milky Way structures to the naked eye. Winter brings maximum atmospheric transparency and excellent stability.
Recommended Viewing Spots
The Sanbon Matsu parking area is the most accessible viewing point, offering a wide parking lot, open sky, and restrooms for extended stays.
Near Akanuma parking, conditions also suit observation, though nighttime parking closures sometimes occur—check ahead.
Access
From Kiyotaki IC on the Nikko-Utsunomiya Expressway, National Route 120 (Irohazaka road) takes about 40–50 minutes. Tobu buses run from JR Nikko and Tobu Nikko stations (get off at Sanbon Matsu). Weekend and autumn-foliage seasons cause heavy Irohazaka traffic—plan accordingly with time to spare.
Stargazing Tips
High elevation means cool summer nights around 10°C, and sub-zero spring/fall temperatures are common. The area is home to wild deer and bears; limit nighttime walking and consider observing from your car. Bring a red-filtered light and show consideration to other observers.
