Overview

Mt. Iwate Yakehashiri International Exchange Village is a comprehensive leisure complex at the north-eastern foot of Mt. Iwate, Hachimantai, Iwate. The "Ginga Station Observatory" within features telescope-based stargazing.

Mt. Iwate's 1719 eruption-formed "Yakehashiri Lava Flow," designated a Special Natural Monument, creates unique black-lava landscape and starry sky combinations found nowhere else.

Observation environment

Positioned in Hachimantai mountainous district, about 30km from Morioka city, minimal streetlights persist in lava flow vicinity. North-direction particularly features dark sky. About 560m elevation permits naked-eye Milky Way visibility on clear nights.

Mt. Iwate silhouette against starry sky enjoys high astrophotography popularity, attracting nationwide landscape-photograph enthusiasts.

Facilities and equipment

"Ginga Station Observatory" features a 20cm refractor telescope with regular stargazing sessions. Complex facilities include campground, cottage, hot spring facility "Yakehashiri-no-Yu," with star-viewing camping popularity.

Grassland camping features tent and auto sites; star-viewing while camping proves popular.

Access

About 15 minutes by car from Nishi-ne IC on the Tohoku Expressway. About 40 minutes from Morioka city. Excellent access conditions.

Stargazing tips

Lava-flow trail entry vicinity features most open observation. Black lava surface minimizes heat reflection and ground-based updraft turbulence, stabilizing observation. Summer campground busy periods necessitate red-filter lighting attention—exercise environmental consideration.
