Overview

Mt. Gomadan is located at elevation 1372m in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. Positioned deep in the Kii Mountains along the Koya-Ryujin Skyline connecting Kōya and Ryujin Hot Spring, this mountain's summit area is one of the Kinki region's darkest stargazing spots.

Observation environment

Surrounded by deep mountains of the Kii Peninsula, Mt. Gomadan sits over 50 kilometers from the nearest major city, Wakayama. With darkness equivalent to Bortle Scale Class 1, the Milky Way's complex structure and dark nebulae are visible to the naked eye.

The elevation of 1372m combined with the pure atmosphere of the Kii Mountains allows star colors to be distinguished with remarkable clarity. Autumn nights under high-pressure systems offer ideal observing conditions.

The parking lot at Gomasan Sky Tower is the most accessible observation point with a paved spacious lot and restroom facilities. The Sky Tower itself closes at night, but the surrounding parking area remains available.

Several parking areas along the Koya-Ryujin Skyline offer different viewing directions.

Access

The Koya-Ryujin Skyline is toll-free. From Arida IC on the Hanwa Expressway, about 1 hour 20 minutes via Kōya; from Minami Kii Tanabe IC via Ryujin Hot Spring, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Winter chain regulations may apply, so prepare studless tires or chains.

Stargazing tips

Mountain weather changes suddenly, requiring careful attention. As fog occurs frequently, check weather forecasts thoroughly before departure. Night traffic on the skyline is minimal, but watch for deer and boar. Drive slowly and carefully.
