Overview

Gunma Astronomical Observatory is a major public observatory at about 885 meters elevation in Takayama Village, Agatsuma County, Gunma Prefecture. It houses two domes containing 150cm and 65cm reflecting telescopes, making it one of Japan's largest public facilities. Takayama Village is a member of the "Japan's Most Beautiful Villages" association and prioritizes environmental preservation. The surrounding area has minimal light pollution with good observation conditions.

Observation Environment

The 885-meter elevation offers clear views to the south and west. Takayama's rural mountain character preserves low artificial light. The Bortle scale rates Class 3, allowing Milky Way visibility. However, eastern views toward Maebashi and Takasaki show some light pollution, making western and southern observations more effective.

Facilities and Equipment

The 150cm telescope is opened during evening stargazing sessions with professional staff guidance on seasonal celestial objects. The 65cm telescope runs detailed observation programs. The outdoor viewing area features binoculars and small telescopes for self-guided exploration. Daytime solar observation and exhibition viewing are available.

Access

About 30 minutes by car from Kanetsu Expressway's Shibukawaikaho IC. The 15-minute walk from parking to the observatory slopes gently upward on a deliberately dimly-lit path that lets you enjoy the starry walk.

Stargazing Tips

Evening programs operate year-round but close during poor weather. Check the official website for daily status before departing. The path from parking is dark; bring a flashlight. Using a red light respects other observers.
