Kuju Highland — Kyushu's Premier Starry Grassland at the Foot of the Kuju Mountains

Oppdatert: 2026-03-12 06:14:10editorial

Overview

Kuju Highland is a sprawling grassland at about 800 meters elevation in Taketa, Oita Prefecture, on the southern flank of the Kuju mountain range. Protected as part of Aso-Kuju National Park, this vast upland pasture is cherished by astronomy enthusiasts as one of Kyushu's most beautiful stargazing destinations.

Observation Environment

Kuju is centrally located in Kyushu's mountains, sufficient distance from major cities like Oita and Kumamoto to minimize artificial light. The 800-meter grassland elevation and nearly unobstructed terrain ensure a 180-degree-plus southern panorama. The Bortle scale rates Class 2, with a powerful Milky Way band visible. Against the Kuju range silhouette, the Milky Way creates a spectacular image known to Japan's astrophotography community.

Kuju Highland's main road features several viewpoint parking areas, each with different directional sky views. The Kuju Highland Observation Point especially opens the southern sky, ideal for summer Milky Way photography. Kuju Highland Cottage accommodates visitors, offering on-site stargazing from lit-reduced grounds. Breakfast included means your lodging doubles as an observation platform.

Access

About 50–60 minutes from Kyushu Expressway Kuju IC. Alternatively, approach via Aso from Kumamoto.

Stargazing Tips

Grassland radiative cooling drops temperatures rapidly on clear nights. Even summer nights fall below 15°C; pack a fleece or windbreaker. Pasture fencing marks private land; respect boundaries.
