Onidake Observatory — Kyushu's Darkest Skies on the Goto Islands with a 60cm Telescope

Oppdatert: 2026-03-12 06:14:07editorial

Overview

Onidake Observatory, on Fukue Island's Onidake (elevation 315 m) slopes in Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, houses a 60cm Newton-type reflecting telescope—among Kyushu's largest. The Goto Islands, about 100km west of Kyushu's mainland, offer minimal light pollution impossible on the continent, enabling extraordinary dark-sky experience.

Observation Environment

Surrounded entirely by ocean, 100+ kilometers from Nagasaki city, Goto presents unprecedented darkness. Bortle Class 2 is achieved. The marine environment reduces atmospheric particles; star colors appear vivid—island-only advantages. Winter high-pressure systems bring exceptional seeing conditions favorable for planetary observation.

Facilities and Information

The 60cm Newton reflecting telescope opens for reserved evening stargazing. The large aperture permits detailed observation of lunar craters, Saturn's rings, nebula glows—phenomena requiring larger instruments. The exhibition room displays related materials.

Access

About 5 minutes from Goto Tsubaki Airport; about 15 minutes from Fukue Port. Fukue Island is reached via 85-minute high-speed ferry from Nagasaki Harbor or 3.5-hour conventional ferry. Alternatively, Fukuoka and Nagasaki airports offer flights to Goto Tsubaki.

Stargazing Tips

Island weather shifts rapidly; cloudy skies can develop suddenly. Extend your stay to allow multiple nighttime opportunities. Evening stargazing requires advance reservation—essential for travel planning. Oceanic winds are strong; windproof measures are mandatory.
