Gomadanzan (Mt. Gomadan) — Japan's Spiritual Peak Overlooking the Starlit Sea of the Kii Peninsula

Overview

Gomadanzan is a 1,372-meter peak in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. Along the Koya-Ryujin Skyline connecting Koya and Ryujin Hot Springs, this deep-mountain site offers one of the Kii region's darkest stargazing environments. The summit has one of the darkest skies in the Kansai region.

Observation Environment

Gomadanzan is surrounded by the Kii Peninsula's deep mountains, positioned over 50 kilometers in a straight line from the nearest major city, Wakayama. With a Bortle scale rating of Class 1, the sky reveals the Milky Way's intricate structure and dark nebulae visible to the naked eye. The 1,372-meter altitude and pure Kii mountain air allow star colors to stand out with stunning clarity. Autumn nights under high pressure are ideal for observation.

Recommended Observation Spots

The Gomasan Sky Tower parking area is the most accessible observation point, featuring paved parking and restrooms. The tower itself closes at night, but the lot remains available. Several parking areas line the Koya-Ryujin Skyline, each offering different directional sky views.

Access

The Koya-Ryujin Skyline is toll-free. From Arita IC (Hanwa Expressway) via Koya, about 1 hour 20 minutes; from Nishi Tanabe IC via Ryujin Hot Springs, about 1.5 hours. Winter chain regulations may apply; chains or studless tires are recommended.

Stargazing Tips

As a mountain area, watch for sudden weather changes. Fog is common, so check forecasts carefully before departing. While nighttime traffic is sparse, watch for deer and wild boar. Drive slowly.
