Jododaira Observatory — Tohoku's Best Stargazing at 1,575 Meters Elevation

Overview

Jododaira Observatory is a celestial observation facility at about 1,575 meters elevation on Fukushima City's Bandai-Asahi Skyline, along Route 169. Located on a volcanic plateau surrounded by Asahi-Komafuji and Ichisso Mountain, this is one of Tohoku's premier observation sites. Inside a 5.5-meter dome sits a 40cm reflecting telescope. With high altitude and no major nearby light sources, the Milky Way is vividly visible to the naked eye on favorable nights.

Observation Environment

At 1,575 meters, the atmosphere is thinner and water vapor and dust are reduced compared to lowlands, making star brightness noticeably enhanced. Though Fukushima city is about 40km away, the Bandai-Asahi Skyline's curves shield observers from urban light as elevation increases. The facility achieves Bortle Class 2 conditions with 6th-magnitude stars visible on good nights.

Facilities and Equipment

The main 40cm reflecting telescope has professional staff explaining seasonal objects. An adjacent visitor center teaches visitors about Asahi Mountain's nature and volcanic activity. The rest house serves light refreshments with a break lounge. Restrooms are available for extended observation sessions.

Access and Cautions

The Bandai-Asahi Skyline operates mid-April to mid-November, closing winters. Toll-free. From Fukushima-West IC: about 30 minutes to the skyline entrance, then 10 more minutes to the observatory. Volcanic activity sometimes restricts access; check current conditions before visiting. High elevation means temperatures below 10°C at night even in summer—warm clothing is essential.
