Misato Observatory — Wakayama's 105cm Telescope with Expert Stargazing Guidance
Overview
Misato Observatory, at about 430 meters in Kimi, Kaiso County, Wakayama, is a public observatory with a 105cm reflecting telescope carrying the tagline, "Miracle Star-Sky Meeting Place." About 1.5 hours from Osaka, it's popular with Kansai astronomers. Professional staff offer attentive stargazing guidance, excelling as an amateur-friendly facility.
Observation Environment
Kimi is in the Wakayama mountains; the Oiseyama range blocks Wakayama and Osaka light. To the south, the Kii Mountains open toward darkness. Bortle Class 3 ensures Milky Way visibility. The southern sky is especially dark with excellent conditions.
Facilities and Information
The 105cm reflecting telescope opens during evening stargazing sessions (20:00–21:30). Seasonal planets, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies are observed with professional narration. Ticket prices: adults ¥1,500, middle-high school students ¥200. Planetarium provides seasonal explanations; exhibitions teach astronomy fundamentals. Cloud-prone nights benefit from planetarium availability.
Access
About 60 minutes from Hanwa Expressway's Kaino-East IC via Route 370. Roads are paved well despite mountain terrain. Free parking is available directly below the observatory.
Stargazing Tips
Evening stargazing dates and times vary seasonally; check official website beforehand. Post-program, self-guided observation with binoculars or personal telescopes is possible from parking areas. Mountain nights turn quite cold seasonally—always prepare extra layers.
