Zamami Island — Okinawa's Island Paradise Where Kerama-Blue Sea Meets Starry Night Skies
Overview
Zamami Island, about 40km west of Okinawa main island in the Kerama Islands, became central to the Kerama Islands National Park in 2014. The island's "Kerama Blue"—internationally famed transparent seawater for diving—attracts visitors. Yet stargazing riches are equal: nighttime darkness permits a full starry display. The island merges sea and star into luxurious timelessness.
Observation Environment
Zamami's ~600 residents concentrate near the port; venturing inland reveals minimal artificial light. About 40km from Naha, visible western horizon light touches the sea horizon yet overhead darkness is ample. Bortle Class 2 ensures vivid Milky Way. Subtropical warmth permits extended outdoor observation across seasons—a comfort advantage.
Recommended Observation Sites
Kami-no-Hama observation platform (island's west side) faces away from Okinawa, offering maximum darkness. Kosozamami Beach's south-opening horizon suits southern-constellation work. Takatsuki Mountain—the island's highest point—offers 360 views but nighttime hiking demands caution.
Access
High-speed ferry "Queen Zamami": about 50 minutes from Naha Tomari Port. Conventional ferry "Zamami": about 120 minutes. 2–3 high-speed daily, one conventional daily. Summer reservations fill early—advance booking is prudent. Island lodging centers on minshuku and pensions; many couple with dive shops.
Stargazing Tips
Subtropical humidity is high; telescope and camera condensation prevention is essential. Winter (December–February) brings lower humidity with improved transparency. Beaches shift with tides; timing matters. Summer urchins—care required near ocean.
