Akiyoshidai - 360-Degree Starry Sky Across Japan's Largest Karst Plateau in Japan
Overview
Akiyoshidai is one of Japan's largest karst plateaus spanning Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, designated as both a national park and special natural monument. The unique landscape of sparse white limestone dotting vast grassland captivates many as a spectacular hiking spot during the day and a breathtaking stargazing location at night.
Although the elevation is only about 300 meters, there are almost no obstructions on the plateau, so a 360-degree panoramic starry sky unfolds to the very horizon.
Observation Environment
Akiyoshidai is located nearly in the center of Yamaguchi Prefecture, maintaining a suitable distance from both the coastline and major inland cities. There are almost no streetlights on the plateau, providing darkness equivalent to Bortle scale class 3.
The great advantage of the karst plateau is its flatness and vastness. With almost no buildings or trees, you can enjoy the starry sky in all 360 directions. It is an ideal environment for tracking constellations rising from and setting below the horizon.
Recommended Observation Points
The parking lot at Karst Observatory is spacious and fully equipped with restrooms, making it the most accessible observation point. From the observatory, you can overlook the entire plateau and capture unique photographs combining the limestone silhouette with the starry sky.
The parking area near Chojagamori is also a popular observation spot, offering a slightly different angle of the starry sky from the north.
Access
Good access from Mine IC on the Chugoku Expressway at about 15 minutes by car. Also about 50 minutes from Yamaguchi Ube Airport.
Observation Tips
Akiyoshidai is often windy, so a windbreak jacket or windbreaker is essential. As it is grassland, moisture rises from the ground, so placing a waterproof sheet under your leisure sheet adds comfort. At night, you may encounter wildlife (deer, wild boar), so making noise to signal your presence serves as a safety measure.
