Overview

Mt. Gomadan is a 1,372-meter peak in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. Located along the Koya-Ryujin Skyline connecting Koyasan and Ryujin Hot Springs, deep within the Kii Mountains, the summit area of this mountain is one of the Kansai region's premier celestial observation spots with remarkably dark skies.

Observation Environment

Mt. Gomadan is surrounded by deep mountains of the Kii Peninsula, with the nearest major city, Wakayama, more than 50 kilometers away in a straight line. The darkness corresponds to Bortle scale class 1, allowing the complex structure of the Milky Way and dark nebulae to be visible to the naked eye.

The 1,372-meter elevation combined with the Kii Mountains' pristine atmosphere creates an environment where the color differences between stars are distinctly visible. Particularly on nights covered by autumn high-pressure systems, perfect observation conditions prevail.

The Gomasan Sky Tower parking area is the most accessible observation point. It features a paved, spacious parking area and complete restroom facilities. While the Sky Tower itself is closed at night, the surrounding parking area remains available.

Several parking areas line the Koya-Ryujin Skyline, each offering open views of different directions.

Access

The Koya-Ryujin Skyline is free to use. From Arida IC on the Hanwa Expressway via Koyasan, it takes about 1 hour 20 minutes; from Minami-Kino-Tanabe IC via Ryujin Hot Springs, about 1.5 hours. Winter may bring chain regulations, so be prepared with either winter tires or chains.

Observation Tips

In this mountainous area, weather can change rapidly. The region is prone to fog formation, so carefully check the weather forecast before departing. Although oncoming traffic is minimal on the nighttime skyline, watch for sudden appearances of deer and wild boar. Drive slowly.
