Hateruma Island Starry Sky Observation Tower - Japan's Ultimate Stargazing Experience at the Southernmost Inhabited Island
Overview
Hateruma Island is Japan's southernmost inhabited island (north latitude 24°02') belonging to Taketomi Town, Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture. The island's name derives from "hate no uruma" (outer coral reef), placing it literally at Japan's southern edge.
The island features a starry sky observation tower where you can experience one of Japan's darkest skies. This small island with a population of about 500, where even traffic signals are absent, enables an ultimate stargazing experience.
Observation Environment
Hateruma Island offers Japan's most exceptional darkness. Surrounded entirely by ocean and located about 60 kilometers from Ishigaki Island, the nearest large island, artificial light influence is virtually nonexistent. The Bortle scale rating of class 1 ranks among the world's darkest skies.
At north latitude 24°02', the southernmost inhabited location in Japan, the Southern Cross can be observed at its highest altitude in Japan. From late December through June, the Southern Cross is observable, with conditions optimal around May.
The Milky Way appears in its true form as a brightly illuminated river spanning the sky, with dark nebulae branching from it traceable to the naked eye.
Facilities and Observation Tower
The starry sky observation tower features a telescope and planetarium. However, operating conditions may vary, so confirm the latest operational status before visiting.
Regardless of the tower's status, superb starry skies can be enjoyed from anywhere on the island. Nishi Beach (North Beach) is particularly excellent, with the southern horizon widely open for optimal observations.
Access
About 60-80 minutes by high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Port Terminal. However, the Hateruma route is greatly affected by sea conditions, particularly in winter with frequent cancellations. While day trips are possible, staying at a local inn is essentially required to enjoy the nighttime starry sky.
Observation Tips
Hateruma Island is overall flat with low elevation, so no special travel is needed for observation. Sufficient darkness is available within walking distance from accommodations. However, street lighting is extremely sparse throughout the island, so a light for navigation (red recommended) is essential. Sea winds constantly blow, making the perceived temperature lower than actual temperature. Even in summer, bringing a long-sleeved shirt is advisable. While habu snakes are absent, encounters with coconut crabs are possible, so watch your step.
