Terahoku Celestial Sphere Hall - Kagoshima's Premier Stargazing Spot Certified as Japan's Best Seven Times

Overview

Terahoku Celestial Sphere Hall is an astronomical observation facility within "Terahoku Uwaba Park" in Terahoku Town, Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Having been officially recognized seven times by the Ministry of Environment's nationwide starlight observation survey as "the place in Japan with the most beautiful starry sky," it is literally a premier stargazing destination representing all of Japan.

The celestial sphere hall built on a 550-meter-high knoll is characterized by its unique space-themed architecture and houses a 65-centimeter Cassegrain reflector telescope.

Observation Environment

Terahoku Town is located in the mountainous interior of the Osumi Peninsula, with a view of Sakurajima volcano across Kinko Bay. With no major metropolitan areas nearby and the Pacific Ocean opening to the south, the environment is minimally affected by artificial light.

With Bortle scale class 2 darkness, the Milky Way crosses overhead as a powerful band. The exceptionally dark southern sky allows observation of southern celestial objects (such as Omega Centauri) that are difficult to see from Honshu. The combination of Sakurajima's silhouette and the starry sky creates a spectacular scene unique to this location.

Facilities and Usage Information

The 65-centimeter Cassegrain reflector telescope is open to the public during nighttime observation events. Inside the facility, panel displays showcase nebulae and stars photographed with astronomical observation equipment, creating a unique universe-themed space.

Terahoku Uwaba Park also includes camping areas and bungalows, allowing visitors to combine outdoor activities with stargazing.

Access

About 30 minutes by car from Kanoya city center. From Kagoshima city, about 2 hours via the Sakurajima Ferry; from Kagoshima Airport, about 90 minutes.

Observation Tips

While Kagoshima Prefecture has a warm climate, the 550-meter elevation becomes comfortably cool at night even in summer. Though winters are not extremely cold, winds are often strong, so wind protection is necessary. During periods of active Sakurajima volcanic eruptions, volcanic ash may reduce transparency.
