Overview

Shirabiso Highland is a highland located at 1,918-meter elevation at the western foot of the South Alps in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture. With absolutely no street lights nearby, it's a sacred place among astronomy enthusiasts—one of Japan's darkest sky locations.

Views encompassing the South Alps' Seirei and Terigatake Peaks and Central Alps' ridge create an overwhelming landscape where mountains and starry skies merge.

Observation Environment

Shirabiso Highland's darkness is remarkable. Remote from nearest settlements with zero street lights anywhere. Upon arrival with car lights off, the abundance of stars surprises even before eyes adjust to darkness.

Bortle scale class 1 achieves ideal conditions allowing zodiacal light and gegenschein observation. The Milky Way appears three-dimensional with dark nebula silhouettes recognizable to the naked eye.

Facilities and Usage Information

The "Highland Shirabiso" lodge offers accommodation. With an attached restaurant, observing can begin immediately after dinner.

The lodge's expansive parking area and observatory provide primary observation points. Photography combining South Alps' ridgelines with starry skies is possible here.

Access and Important Notes

About 90 minutes by car from Iida IC on the Chuo Expressway. The extended mountain road drive recommends arriving during daylight. Road sections are narrow—first-time nighttime visits aren't recommended.

High elevation creates consistently low temperatures. Even summer nights drop near 0°C. Thick down jacket and gloves are essential. Cellular coverage is poor in many sections—prepare offline maps.

Observation Tips

This remote location demands preparation and respect for nature. Check weather carefully before traveling. Summer afternoons can be the best time for comfortable stargazing at this elevation, combining day exploration with nighttime observation.
